We may have our very own All-Natural healing and regenerative medicine right in our own bodies. For centuries, humans have been searching for the so-called “Fountain of Youth.” Now, research suggests that we might look no further than our own body’s blood stream. PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma is drawn from our own blood supply. It’s most well known for successfully treating athletes with various problems such as tendon, ligament and musculoskeletal injuries.
The preparation of PRP is simple. Your own blood is drawn and spun down in a special FDA approved centrifuge that separates blood cells and leaves a high concentration of platelet rich plasma. The plasma derived is “super charged” with many more platelets than what is normally found in a usual drop of blood. With PRP, the concentration of platelets and “growth factors” within are as much as 10 times greater than in ordinary plasma.
PRP is used to create a healing cascade that stimulates the release of growth hormones and a local stem cell response. Basically it uses our body’s own healing and regenerative abilities by injuring the tissue with the injection and supplying the tissue with a high concentration of platelets that disperse locally and can assist the body to regenerate healthier cells of our own.
Even though we have commonly used PRP in orthopedic sports medicine, it has also been used in dentistry, for chronic pain and as an adjunct to surgical procedures. More recently, and possibly the fastest growing field of medicine that PRP is being used in is Aesthetic Medicine and anti-aging medicine. The use of PRP can help restore aged or damaged tissue to a more youthful state and support optimal health for months.
Some of the exciting treatments include hair restoration, acne treatment, facial volume loss, fine lines and wrinkles and many other cosmetic treatments. It has been used adjunctively with just about any laser and skin treatment to accelerate the healing process and assist the body’s own ability to regenerate healthier tissue, hair follicles, collagen and adipose tissue. It is also being used in the treatment of incontinence and sexual wellness for women and men. It is often referred to as “Vampire” treatments because of the blood plasma component.
Overall the possibilities appear to be endless. My training was done with a Pain Intervention Specialist as a less-invasive option for many chronic pain patients. There are more and more studies being done in these areas. The studies are generally small and antidotal in nature as there is no “drug” to study. The complications and side effects are few as there would be no adverse reaction to your own blood. The cost is generally much lower than other more invasive procedures.
Many of the treatments done with PRP such as hair restoration or treatment of stress urinary incontinence offer clients something much more cost effective without the use of drugs or surgical intervention.
Basically, PRP can be used to accelerate recovery and improve treatment outcomes.
Could this be the future of medicine? Do we have a limitless supply of our own fountain right in our own bodies by utilizing our own plasma? More and more research is being done looking at this exciting regenerative therapy.
Depending on the type of procedure, you may see benefits almost immediately. The results are cumulative so they get better over time as your body begins to regenerate healthier cells. Many people are becoming more proactive overall with health and wellness. PRP adds another dimension to that phil-osophy, providing a way to regenerate healthier cells in addition to supporting the body nutritionally, hormonally and with an overall healthy lifestyle.
